Northeast Philadelphia streets and sidewalks
Northeast Philadelphia is home to hundreds of thousands of people, and much of it was built later than the older rowhouse neighborhoods closer to Center City. Mayfair and its neighbors include many 20th-century rowhouses. Many Northeast blocks have front driveways or rear driveways shared along a row.
What we hear about in Northeast Philadelphia

What to know before you fix it
The Streets Department says owners with deed rights to a shared driveway or alley share the repair cost. Under Code § 11-506, if the City paves one after a nuisance order, it can assess the users and lien unpaid bills. Adding or widening a curb cut needs a Curb and Footway Permit, and the City’s Development Checklist says a cut wider than 24 feet needs a Zoning Board variance. Driveway aprons & curb cuts.
The rules are the same citywide
In every Philadelphia neighborhood, the property owner is responsible for the sidewalk and curb. Work in the right-of-way needs a Curb and Footway Permit pulled by a contractor with a Curb Setter License. If an owner ignores a Streets Department notice, the City can do the work and bill them.
