Germantown streets and sidewalks
Germantown was founded in 1683 and became part of the city in 1854. It has some of Philadelphia’s oldest stone houses, plus large Victorian twins and singles. The Historical Commission designated the Germantown Urban Village Historic District in 2024.
What we hear about in Germantown
- Retaining walls along the sidewalk that bulge or shed stone
- Long runs of steps up to houses set above the street
- Old slate, stone or brick paving mixed with concrete
- Root damage from big street and yard trees
What to know before you fix it
The Streets Department lists retaining walls with sidewalks and driveways as private property the City does not maintain, and says owners with deed rights share costs. If a wall is failing, get it assessed first: pouring a new sidewalk against a moving wall is wasted money. If your property is in the historic district, sidewalk and step work needs a Historical Commission project review, which is free.
The rules are the same citywide
In every Philadelphia neighborhood, the property owner is responsible for the sidewalk and curb. Work in the right-of-way needs a Curb and Footway Permit pulled by a contractor with a Curb Setter License. If an owner ignores a Streets Department notice, the City can do the work and bill them.
